Nelly Kim Furtado, born on December 2, 1978, is a very hardworking and talented Canadian singer as well as songwriter.

She has made her reputation worldwide selling 20 million albums and 20 million singles bringing her total sales to over 40 million.

She has topped the charts many times with hit songs like I’m Like a Bird in 2000, Promiscuous in 2006 and Say it Right in 2007. She has an outstanding net worth of $35 million.

Nelly was born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Her parents were Portuguese and were emigrants from the Azores. Nelly was given the name after Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim.

She also had siblings named Michael Anthony and Lisa Anne. Her father, Antonio Jose Furtado and mother, Maria Manuela were both from Sao Miguel Island. Her family raised them as Roman Catholic.

She started performing and singing since the age of 4 in Portuguese. She first made a public performance singing a duet with her mother at church on Portugal Day.

She also performed in a Portuguese marching band. Nelly’s parents were the source of her strong work ethic. Nelly met Tallis Newkirk who was a member of the hip hop group Plains of Fascination in Toronto and contributed vocals to their album Join the Ranks in 1996.

Nelly graduated from Mount Douglas Secondary School and moved to Toronto in 1996. She formed a trip hop duo called Nelstar with Newkirk in the following year.

She later joined DreamWorks Records in 1999 and released her first single called Party’s Just Begun (Again). Nelly continued the collaboration with Eaton and West who helped produce her debut album called Whoa, Nelly! in 2000.

The album was a huge success and she then released some supporting singles called I’m like a Bird, Turn off the Light and On the Radio (Remember the Days).

She received four Grammy nominations in 2002 followed by Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her debut single. Nelly’s second album was released in 2003 and was named Folklore with a final track dedicated to her daughter, Nevis.

It also had a single called Forca which was the official anthem of the 2004 European Football Championship. Nelly performed this song in Lisbon in the finals of the European Football.

Then she eventually released her third album named Loose which also was a success. Her first number-one hit in the United States was Promiscuous and in the United Kingdom was Maneater.

She also played in many movies namely Roswell, Floribella, One Life to Live, CSI: NY, Punk’d, Max Payne and many more. She also won many popular awards in her successful career.

She has also appeared in some TV shows as herself.
