Brooks was born in Austin, Texas as Mehcad Jason McKinley Brooks to Alberta Phillips, an Austin American-Statesman editorial and Billy Brooks, a former pro football player. From the very early age, Mehcad showed keen interest in acting so right after graduating in the year 1999, he joined the University of Southern California's School of Cinema-Television. In order to go USC, Brooks refused the basketball scholarships and offers from Ivy League schools. This decision of him shows how desperate he was to join USC for his further studies.

In the beginning of his career, he presented himself as a fashion model by appearing on Calvin Klein underwear. Then after, he appeared on the ABC TV drama Desperate Housewives as Matthew Applewhite from 2005 to 2006. In the mean time, he presented himself as Harry Flournoy in Glory Road. He also appeared in the 2007 film In the Valley of Elah. In the year 2008, Brooks appeared on the TV series The Game with a guest appearance opposite Tia Mowry as her boyfriend. After a year, in 2009, he was seen on FOX's TV series Dollhouse. He also appeared in the second season of HBO's True Blood where he portrayed Benedict "Eggs". He also appeared in the now-canceled ABC series The Deep End in the early of 2010 as attorney Malcolm Bennet.

In the mean time, he had a guest appearance in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in the episode "Personal Fouls" as Prince Miller. For the Center for Reproductive Rights, Brooks was featured in a public service announcement in the year 2013.

Above all, Brooks have never let his personal life affect his career. He has never let his relationship, dating and affairs to be an issue. He is able to maintain privacy in his personal life by not disclosing his girlfriend and his relationship status. There are no any rumors about this thirty four year old actor to be married and having a wife. This doesn’t conclude him to be gay but results him as a young, dashing bachelor. Being single is a plus point for him as many girls are attracted towards him due to his acting skill, down to earth nature and that sexy masculine physique with a good height of 1.9m. Bare body of him can be seen in his shirtless pictures, which are posted in his Instagram account.

After appearing in many movies and TV shows, Brooks is now establishing himself in the industry. In his journey, he has made numerous fans following him in different social networking sites like twitter and Instagram.
